Item Description
Very handsome, 19th century French mirror, circa 1880, with serpentine top - which the French call "chapeau gendarme" - policeman's hat - from the style worn in the 18th-19th centuries. The mirror's wide frame has a high raised outcurving edge followed by a slightly incurving section which is decorated with alternating bands of burnished and matt gold and is finished with a delicate row of beading along the sight edge. The original mirror plate has just a little light age but gives an excellent reflection and this mirror would make an eye-catching overmantel.
