Famulus chair by John Parkinson Hully for P.E.Gane
Hully is only really known for the Famulus chair which he designed in the 1930’s for the progressive maker P.E.Gane of Bristol , but in his day he was one of Britain’s most distinguished furniture designers . He worked with Marcel Breuer who joined P.E.Gane as a designer when he came to Britain in 1936 .
It retains its original Famulus Patent label. Famulus being the Latin word for servant or assistant. If you’d bought this chair some 90 years ago it would have been a most comfortable and well made servant indeed!
The armchair is made from steamed bentwood in steamed birch which just needed a light clean and polish. It’s been reupholstered by our in-house upholsterer in a Camira, natural wool and flax weave. The colour is a soft orange woven through with a natural shade.
62.5cms wide, seat height 42cms, back height 80cms, total depth 84cms
Condition
Frame cleaned and oiled. As with all vintage furniture you must expect to see some minor signs of wear if you look very closely.
Fully re upholstered from the frame up, new foam and top cover in a Mainline flax from Camira fabrics.
