Item Description

ANTIQUE ORIGINAL GEORGE III SILK AND GILT THREAD NEEDLEWORK EMBROIDERY

A charming depicting of a young woman holding a lamb in a landscape.

The artist has expertly used different techniques. The face of the woman is hand painted on silk whilst her clothing, the lamb, trees and background all use different embroidery techniques specifically chosen to represent the qualities and characteristics of each item to great effect.

Inscribed verso ‘Needlework Picture by Elizabeth Whitton, about 1810 (the bridge and background are at Nostell Priory)’.

Nostell Priory is located near Crofton in West Yorkshire and is still standing today, It is a Paladian Mansion with interiors by Robert Adam and extensive gardens and grounds, the bridge, lake and garden illustrated in the embroidery can still be seen today.

Framed and glazed in its original deep set gilt frame.

The embroidery in good vintage order with wear commensurate with age. There is a small section of the silk backing fabric missing at the top edge and there are some loose threads in the body of the piece but overall it is in good condition for its age.
