Item Description
PAIR OF EBONY BOOKENDS
A charming and stylish pair of bookends in the form of two elephants depicted in a somewhat stylised manner.
Each one is hand-carved from a single piece of ebony, mostly polished with some scratch carving to add decoration and definition in places.
Probably Anglo-Indian in origin or possibly Ceylonese.
They have a slight feeling of Art Deco about them, so are probably of that era rather than the earlier, less stylised and more intricately detailed 19th-century examples. I would say they date from the early mid-20th century period.
They are in good vintage condition with some minor wear commensurate with age. There are some fine cracks in the wood and some general wear. It appears that one of the tusks has become detached and reattached at some point.
Each one approximately measures: 19cm high x 14cm wide x 12cm deep.
