Item Description
ANTIQUE ORIGINAL GOUACHE ON PAPER PAINTING
Depicting a rural scene, a mother is protecting her puppy from a large bird of prey above, possibly a golden eagle. The dog appears to be an English Pointer or similar gun breed, the subject is rather charming and unusual, as rather than protecting a kill she is protecting her own puppy, perhaps symbolic for the artist.
Unsigned but painted in a charming, provincial style. The artist has managed to capture feeling in the painting with great skill, the snarling yet nervous mother, the swooping eagle and the scared, cute puppy. There is a lone pine tree to the left with an impressive mountain scape behind, indicating that the setting is possibly Scottish.
Provenance: from a rural farm near Ellesmere in Shropshire.
Probably dating from the early 19th Century period or possibly late 18th century. Circa 1790-1820 in date
Framed and glazed in the most wonderful ebonised frame with a naturally occurring crackle finish.
The painting itself is in good vintage condition, there is some minor wear commensurate with age but nothing serious enough to detract from the image. The frame is also in good vintage order with wear commensurate with age.
Overall measurements: 38cm x 32cm x 3cm.
