Item Description

MID CENTURY ITALIAN STACKING DINING CHAIRS

An iconic design by well-renowned Italian architect and designer Vico Magistretti (1920-2006).

Made from fibreglass reinforced plastic, the Selene chair was the first production chair to be formed from one sheet of plastic and became one of Magistretti’s best-known product designs.

Conceived in 1961, and after a lengthy development period, it was introduced in 1968 at Triennale di Milano and went into production for Artemide between 1969 and the 1980s.

Despite only being made entirely from a single sheet of thermo-hardening plastic with a thickness of only three millimetres, comfort was a key aspect of the design. The chair’s seat and back, which have been moulded into concave curves, envelop the sitter and ensure a high level of comfort.

In 1970, the chair was nominated for a Compasso d’Oro, in recognition of not just its aesthetic but also the manufacturing possibilities it represented. It now features in many design museums and collections worldwide.

The chairs are in good vintage condition, they are still solid and sturdy, there is cosmetic wear throughout commensurate with age, including scuffs, scratches and areas of discolouration, mainly on the seats.

Approximate measurements: 76cm high x 47cm wide x 51cm deep. The seat height is roughly 45cm.
