Item Description

ORIGINAL OIL ON CANVAS PAINTING DEPICTING A FEMALE SITTER, 20TH CENTURY

A characterful portrait depicting a woman deep in thought, exuding a fun yet strong energy in a classic 1920s/1930s wavy bob dressed in a multi coloured striped blouse/dress.

The artist has used different techniques to great effect. It feels like the painting was painted with confident energy throughout, using thicker impasto in places with more sketchy brushstrokes in others, also utilising the negative space of the raw canvas underneath.

This work is unsigned; however, we have three portraits available, all by the same hand, and another one was signed. with an indistinct monogram to the lower right, which we have been unable to decipher confidently, but could possibly be ‘G.R.’ Whomever the artist was, it feels like it was painted by an accomplished hand. By repute, they are Scottish in origin.

The other signed work was dated ‘1931’, and this work seems to be of the same period. I would confidently date this work to the 1920s/1930s period.

In a later, yet complementary high-quality gilt frame.

The painting itself is in excellent vintage condition with only minor wear commensurate with age. There is a small area of damage to the canvas in the form of an indent, which translates to the right side of the sitter’s hair. This isn’t noticeable from the front when displayed on the wall. The frame is also in similarly good vintage order.

Overall approximate measurements: 46cm x 38cm x 4cm (18” x 15”). The canvas itself measures approximately 36cm x 27cm (14” x 11”)
