Item Description
VINTAGE FOLK ART EARTHENWARE JUG
Profusely decorated with incised line work, known as sgraffito decoration. Depicting Adam, Eve and the serpent next to the tree of life in the garden of eden in a stylised, folky manner
Of bulbous form, made from terracotta with chunky double handle symbolic of Adam and Eve.
Handmade feel with natural pits and thumb prints etc. intentionally left by the artist to great effect.
Probably dating from the mid 20th Century period. Circa 1960s-1970s.
The jug is in good vintage condition with wear commensurate with age. Because of the rough, rustic, hand made feel of the piece it’s hard to determine whether certain pits are later wear or whether they were always present and part of the manufacturing process, in this vein there is a large pit towards the leg of Eve which could be either and there is a chunk of the internal lip missing around the rim of the opening.
Approximate measurements: 22cm high x 16cm wide x 14cm deep.
