Presented here is a fine petite Victorian table lamp of Gothic Revival design made in England around the 1880`s.The Neo-Gothic style is an architectural & decorative style born in the middle of the 18th Century in England. The arrival of Romanticism in Art & Literature at this time, strongly influenced the public`s enthusiasm for the Middle Ages, Medieval Arts and the new aesthetic quality known as the “Picturesque”. This antique lamp has several design features of the period: the  mythological griffins or winged lions, Neoclassical decorative themes, elegant proportions and good weight.

The Griffin is a mythological creature probably originated in Egypt, with the body, hind legs, and tail of a lion and the wings, front talons, and head of an eagle. In this Victorian lamp though the heads are of lions. As they can fly with superhuman strength, they are considered a symbol of power, wealth, courage, and prestige.

The elongated form & delicate proportions make this lamp well proportioned for a shelf, desk, bedside or mantelpiece. It would suit a range of interiors such as Antique, Art Deco, Traditional, Country, Hollywood Regency, or Contemporary.

The design composition consists of a gold gilt quality fine cast pewter tripod base depicting three mythological griffins with lion faces. The wings elongate towards the top becoming the column of the lamp leading to a new lamp holder covered by a new cream card candle tube. Neoclassical decorative motifs are present between the griffins, ending as a decorative finial at the bottom. The feet have new black felt underneath to protect the furniture below.

The lamp is finished with a quality new clip-on cream silk candle lampshade. The shade is tapered and has wide pleat detailing, complete with a crepe trim top & bottom. It is lined in the same colour which enhances the glow of light. This lampshade is included in the price.

The lamp carries 1 standard small screw light bulb (E14) up to 40 Watts. At present fitted & photographed with a Candle Clear shaped lightbulb of 25 Watts, which is included in the price.

This antique lamp is in very good condition for its age. The frame is sound with no damages or broken parts. The metal surfaces overall are in good condition with the original antique patina preserved. There are superficial marks, rubbing to the gilt & patination in places , this effect is uniform adding character & depth . The lampshade is new and in very good condition.

GOTHIC REVIVAL STYLE HISTORY IN ENGLAND

The Gothic Revival or Neo-Gothic style was an architectural & decorative style born in the middle of the 18th Century in England. The arrival of Romanticism in Art & Literature at this time strongly influenced the public`s enthusiasm for the Middle Ages, Medieval Arts and the new aesthetic quality known as the “Picturesque”. Walter Scott published historical novels. Victor Hugo’s famous novel of Notre Dame of Paris (1831) featured the hunchback’s story in the Parisian Gothic cathedral.

By the 1850`s Gothic Revival became the most popular architectural style in the West, peaking around the 1870`s, and falling out of fashion towards the end of the XIX Century. The London Parliament (1840-1860) by architects Charles Barry and Augustus Pugin, and the Saint Pancras Station`s Midland Hotel (1868-1877) by architect George Gilbert Scott are famous examples of the style.
