Item Description

Set of 4 Murano Glass antique wall lights sconces, clear & iridescent crystal, attributed to Barovier & Toso, 1920`s ca, Italian.

These antique wall lights have been gently cleaned while respecting the age patina. They are newly rewired & earthed, PAT tested by an electrician and ready to install. Each has the following new components: silk gold tone cable and E14 Candle lamp holders with card covers. New decorative Candle lightbulbs included. These lights can be used with a dimmer. It is possible to use these sconces in other countries although it may be necessary to purchase different light bulbs suitable to local electricity.

Presented here is a quality decorative set of 4 antique Italian Murano Glass crystal sconces most probably produced by Barovier & Toso between the 1920`s & the 1940`s in the traditional style, with their characteristic iridescent finish. Handcrafted with great attention to detail with a diversity of glass & crystal components, all of this typical signs of quality from the renowned Italian Murano Glass Manufacturer.

The four sconces are a matching set in design & size and they all came from the same property in Italy. The only difference between the two pairs is that the middle crystal on the arm in one pair is "almond " shape, and in the other is "pineapple" shape; these complementary types are  variations on the pendeloque `maple leaf` shape.

The ethereal effect of the iridescent crystals, classical form & elegant proportions make these wall lights well suited for a range of interiors such as Antique, Art Deco, Traditional, Country, Hollywood Regency or Contemporary.

The design of each sconce consists of a gilt metal backplate covered by a clear crystal removable bobeche in the shape of a bowl, with a cut geometric pattern. This crystal portion slides along a gilt metal tubular short bar while fitting the sconce to the wall, and can be secured in place by a ring. The gilt metal backplate has a flat arm to fit to the wall.

From this short bar there are two gilt metal arms curving upwards leading to the lampholders, and a decorative short arm at the center of the sconce curving downwards. These arms are covered in crystals. The glass work is exquisite: flat segments of clear crystal cover the arms sideways. The intersections between these segments are decorated with clear crystal roses of different sizes, the lateral ones are finished with a crystal bead, the central ones carries an iridescent bevelled crystal droplet. These crystal droplets are playful variations on the pendeloque `maple leaf` shape. There are two iridescent droplets hanging along each arm: the one close to the bobeche is of medium size and hangs from an octagonal iridescent crystal, the one at the center of the arm is of large size and hangs from a clear octagonal crystal.

The short arm at the centre of the sconce is also covered sideways by flat clear crystal plus crystal roses with beads & a medium iridescent crystal droplet hanging from an octagonal iridescent crystal.

The two main arms lead to a gilt metal rosette where a clear crystal bobeche sits on top. Each bobeche is decorated with a cut crystal geometric pattern and has a wavy edge. It carries 5 iridescent small crystal droplets, each hanging from a small iridescent octagonal crystal.

In total each sconce carries 15 iridescent crystal droplets: 2 large `maple leaf` pendeloque (arms), 2 medium `almond` or `pineapple` pendeloque (arms), 1 medium `maple leaf` pendeloque (center arm), 10 small `maple leaf` pendeloque (bobeches). Please note that in the "pineapple" pair of sconces, 2 out of the 20 small `maple leaf` pendeloque crystals around the bobeches are of the same type but medium size, probably a replacement.

The `pineapple` pendeloque shape was later in the 1980`s repurposed by Angelo Barovier in the design of the iconic `Taif` chandelier.

On top of each bobeche sits the new Candle lampholder, covered by a new cream card candle tube. Each wall light carries 2 standard small screw light bulbs (E14) up to 60 Watts. At present these lights are fitted & photographed with new decorative warm white dimmable Philips LED Candle clear flame tip shaped light bulbs of 25 Watts. These are included in the price. It would be possible to use any other (E14) Candle light bulbs for a different look, or to add clip-on lampshades.

This set of 4 antique sconces are in good condition for their age. The warm antique patina has been preserved on the metal adding character. The metal frames are sound with no damage. The gilt finish is in good condition with tiny marks & minor rubbing in line with age. All the original antique crystals are present and in good condition for their age.

In the "almond" pair: all the original antique crystal parts & droplets are present and in very good condition for their age, with no chips or cracks and only minor superficial marks & scarce very tiny nibbles/rubbing to the droplets, hardly noticeable.

In the "pineapple" pair: two out of the 10 small `maple leaf` pendeloque crystals around the bobeches are the same type but of medium size (instead of small size), probably a replacement. Minor superficial marks to the clear crystals, & a few tiny chips, nibbles & rubbing to some of the iridescent droplets (to about 1/3 of them). One clear crystal back bobeche has a tiny chip on the trim.

All in line with age & wear, as expected for an antique piece.
