Item Description
Pair Murano Glass antique wall lights sconces, iridescent crystal, attributed to Barovier & Toso, 1920`s ca, Italian.
Presented here is a quality decorative pair of antique Italian Murano Glass crystal sconces most probably produced by Barovier & Toso between the 1920`s & the 1940`s in the traditional style, with their characteristic iridescent finish. Handcrafted with great attention to detail with a diversity of glass & crystal components, all of this typical signs of quality from the renowned Italian Murano Glass Manufacturer.
The ethereal effect of the iridescent crystals, classical form & elegant proportions make these wall lights well suited for a range of interiors such as Antique, Art Deco, Traditional, Country, Hollywood Regency or Contemporary.
The design of each sconce consists of a gilt metal backplate covered by a clear crystal removable bobeche in the shape of a bowl, with a cut geometric pattern. This crystal portion slides along a gilt metal tubular short bar while fitting the sconce to the wall, and can be secured in place by a ring. The gilt metal backplate has a flat arm to fit to the wall.
From this short bar there are two gilt metal arms curving upwards leading to the lampholders, and a decorative short arm at the center of the sconce curving downwards. These arms are covered in crystals. The glass work is exquisite: flat segments of clear crystal cover the arms sideways. The intersections between these segments are decorated with clear crystal roses of different sizes, the lateral ones are finished with a crystal bead, the central ones carries an iridescent bevelled crystal droplet. These crystal droplets are playful variations on the pendeloque `maple leaf` shape. There are two iridescent droplets hanging along each arm: the one close to the bobeche is of medium size and hangs from an octagonal iridescent crystal ( this `pineapple` pendeloque shape was later in the 1980`s repurposed by Angelo Barovier in the design of the iconic `Taif` chandelier) , the one at the center of the arm is of large size and hangs from a clear octagonal crystal.
The short arm at the centre of the sconce is also covered sideways by flat clear crystal plus crystal roses with beads & a medium iridescent crystal droplet hanging from an octagonal iridescent crystal.
The two main arms lead to a gilt metal rosette where a clear crystal bobeche sits on top. Each bobeche is decorated with a cut crystal geometric pattern and has a wavy edge. It carries 5 iridescent small crystal droplets, each hanging from a small iridescent octagonal crystal.
In total each sconce carries 15 iridescent crystal droplets: 2 large `maple leaf` pendeloque (arms), 2 medium `pineapple` pendeloque (arms), 1 medium `maple leaf` pendeloque (center arm), 10 small `maple leaf` pendeloque (bobeches).
