Item Description

Palm tree table lamp on lion feet by Stuart Crystal, signed, in silver plate,1920`s ca, English.

This antique table lamp has been gently cleaned while respecting the age patina. It is newly rewired & earthed, PAT tested by an electrician and ready to use. It has the following new electrical components: lamp holder with a cream card cover, silver tone silk cable, white cord switch & white plug (UK Plug up to 250V). Lightbulb included. This lamp can be used with a dimmer. It is possible to use this light in other countries with a light bulb suitable to local electricity.

Presented here is a fine petite table lamp of Neoclassical design made by Stuart Crystal of England around the 1920`s. It is acid etched signed `Stuart Crystal` on the top portion of the crystal, and the Registered Mark is also stamped on the palm leaves.

It has several design features typical of the Regency (known also as `English Empire`) period: the lion, palm & laurel themes, the combination of Regency & Neoclassical styles, elegant proportions, luxury materials, crisp casting and good weight.

The elongated form & delicate proportions make this lamp well proportioned for a shelf, the bedside or mantelpiece.  The design is classic, timeless & decorative. It would suit a range of interiors such as Antique, Art Deco, Traditional, Country, Hollywood Regency, or Contemporary.

The design consists of a silver plated & faceted crystal base. There is an attractive patina developed over the years on the silver that contrasts with the clear reflective surfaces of the cut faceted crystal.

The composition consists of a palm tree made of silver plated metal & cut crystal sitting on a tripartite silver plated base depicting lion feet. On top of the feet there is an acanthus leaf decoration. An exquisite cut crystal cylinder in the `Hardwicke` pattern becomes the trunk of the palm tree, which has a laurel decoration in silver plate at the top leading to the crown & leaves. On top sits a new lamp holder covered by a new cream card candle tube.

The lamp is finished with a vintage clip-on grey silk lampshade of later date. It has grey fabric trim and metallic gold lining.

The lamp carries 1 standard small screw light bulb (E14) up to 40 Watts. At present fitted & photographed with a Candle Clear shaped lightbulbs of 25 Watts, which is included in the price.  It is possible to use other E14 Candle bulbs.

This antique lamp is in very good condition for its age. The frame is sound with no damages or broken parts. The metal surfaces overall are in good condition with the original antique patina preserved, adding character & depth. There are superficial marks & patination in places. The crystal portion is in very good condition with no chips or cracks. The lampshade is in good condition with no cuts or dents and only minor light marks & rubbing on the outside. All in line with age & wear.

STUART CRYSTAL ENGLAND HISTORY

The Company was established in 1827 by Frederick Stuart, a skilled glassmaker, in the city of Stourbridge, England. In 1920 the iconic `Red House Glass Cone`, a conical brick structure where the crystal was manufactured, was purchased in Wordsley, which is today a glass Museum.

Stuart Crystal gained a reputation for producing high quality, handcrafted crystal glassware. In 1924 the Company began etching the name Stuart on the pieces. They developed numerous patterns such as the `Medallion Glass Cameo` & the diamond & floral motif  `Beaconfield`.

It was also famous for supplying crystal items to shipping liners such as the Titanic, and later in the 1930`s for the Queen Mary. In 1995 Stuart Crystal was bought out by the Waterford Wedgwood Company and finally closed in 2001.

THE REGENCY STYLE IN ENGLAND

It covers the period from 1811 to 1820 when George, Prince of Wales, governed the country as `Regent` during the madness of his father George III. Originally known as “English Empire,” this style was eventually named after England`s Prince Regent. The Regency Style owes a great deal to the French Empire Style, but refinements were added to make it more suitable to English tastes. It retained classical elements of the Georgian period but opened up to more Roman, Greek, Egyptian, Asian and French influences.
