Item Description

Vintage fire screen, fireplace fireguard, foldable 4 panels, gilt bronze & brass, Neoclassical, 1940`s ca, Italian.

This vintage item has been gently cleaned while respecting the aged patina and is ready to use.

This Italian Mid-century fire screen has a Modernist design & Neoclassical scrolling patterns making it light & elegant. It is stamped "MADE IN ITALY" on the back of each panel.

It would make a smart finishing detail to a range of interiors such as Traditional, Country, Art Deco, Hollywood Regency, 70`s Glamour, Shabby Chic, or Contemporary.

Structurally the quality frame is made of solid gilt bronze & brass with great attention to detail.

Four folding panels with several parts are bolted together by pivotal hinges. Each is composed by one tubular column joined together by rotating segments at top & bottom, and finished by a round decorative finial. These finials at the bottom become the feet. The clever & practical system allows the four panels to fully rotate in both directions allowing the fire screen to be placed in different positions. The hole structure is well built, with a good weight and very stable.

Each rectangular panel`s frame has a reeded effect at the front, with 3 straight sides and a wavy pattern at the top, where a folding scrolling handle is attached on the backside of the 2 external panels. The external trim is flat & simple, emphasizing the Modernist Neoclassical shape. Within the frame there is a quality black metal mesh  securely held in place on the reverse by the flat bronze frame.

This fire screen is in very good vintage condition. The frame is sound & sturdy with no missing or broken parts. The original clear lacquer is present on the gilt bronze surfaces. The polished brass finish has a warm patina developed over the years with minor rubbing & tiny marks. The black metal mesh is in very good condition with no damages and only minor tiny marks & rubbing in line with age & wear.

ANTIQUE FIRE SCREEN HISTORY

The fire screen or fireguard began as a piece of furniture working as a protective shield between the occupants of a room and the fireplace, reducing the discomfort of excessive heat from a log fire. Early fire screens were flat panels standing on attached feet or adjustable shield shaped panels mounted on tripod table legs. They were also  used as a decorative cover to the fireplace when nothing was burning inside it.

Soon later appeared the panel fire screen, which has several side panels angled away from the central panel.
The horse screen, or "cheval screen" became popular in France in the 18th Century, at the same time when the pole screen & banner screen also appeared.
