Item Description

Laughing Cavalier butterfly wing silver brooch, TL. Mott, 1920’s ca, English.

This item has been gently cleaned while respecting the vintage patina and is ready to wear. New quality black leatherette gift box included.

Art Deco Sterling silver brooch with a reverse hand decorated painted transfer portrait of `The Laughing Cavalier` & signed after Franz Hals (1584-1666).

The background of this attractive round brooch is made from the delicate blue wing of a Morpho tropical butterfly found in South America. A transfer portrait of the Laughing Cavalier has been coloured and decorated with quality detail by hand & signed. The round frame is enclosed & sealed in convex glass. The outer edge frame is decorated with a rope twist effect silver trim.

On the back there is a clasp with security spring action. It is stamped on the back `Made in England Sterling Silver Rhodium Plated` which probably indicates this is a rare early example by Thomas L. Mott, as later in 1922 Shipton Co patented the Butterfly Wing motif and stamped items on the back.

The brooch is in very good condition with an attractive antique patina on the silver surfaces. Gift box included.

Packing is offered free of charge. We take special professional care while packing. For safe transport the boxed pin would be wrapped in bubble wrap & foam. It would be then put into another box with loose fill packing nuts, safe for posting with a courier. We ship with reliable couriers (signed for, tracked & insured).

Thomas L. Mott - History

Thomas L. Mott company exhibited this type of jewellery at “The British Empire Exhibition” in 1924 in London. Since then these silver brooches with painted motifs often in the Art Deco Style (exotic places, ship cruise liners, birds, love scenes) on Morpho Butterfly wings backgrounds, became hugely popular. Shipton Co applied for the Butterfly Wing patent in 1922. So from this date most brooches hold a Shipton Co patent stamp.

The Laughing Cavalier by Frans Hals

The Laughing Cavalier is a famous portrait by the Dutch Golden Age painter Franz Hals (1584-1666) in the Wallace Collection in London, which has been described as "one of the most brilliant of all Baroque portraits".
