Item Description

Walker & Hall silver plated antique hanging meat domes/food covers/table cloches in graduating sizes, set of 3, 1880`s ca, English.

These antique items have been gently cleaned while preserving the aged patina. They are ready to display/use.

Presented here is a fine quality set of 3 antique Victorian graduating meat dome/food covers in silver plate by famous English manufacturer Walker & Hall. They were originally made together as part of a graduating set of three. They are all stamped inside the cover with the same Walker & Hall marks: a rhomboid shape divided in 4 zones with a crown for the city of Sheffield and 3 Gothic letters: M, T & R. The Company`s flag symbol sits on top with the initials "W & H". Because Henry Hall joined the Company in 1853 and the crown could no longer be used after 1896, it can suggest these domes were made between 1853 & 1896.

All three domes have a hanger for wall suspension, so they could make a great decorative feature on the wall.  We have decided for this decorative reason to preserve the antique patina.

The oval shape surface is simple with no engravings featuring a decorative foliate trim around the edge. The quality casting is crisp & detailed.  This decorative pattern repeats underneath the oval portion of the removable handles. The handle is ornate also with a graduating foliate pattern. They can be removed by unscrewing a nut inside the dome.

They sell together and the price featured here is for the set of 3 domes.

All 3 domes are in good condition for their age. They are sound with no large dents or cracks, only minor impressions in places & marks, together with superficial scratches & rubbing to the metal in line with age & wear. The silver tone finish is uniform along the pieces, with the original dark age patination in places that has been preserved & left unpolished for authenticity adding character.

WALKER & HALL SILVERSMITHS HISTORY

Walker & Hall were British makers in England, specialising in quality items of silver and silver plate from the mid 1800’s. They became one of the largest manufacturers and retailers from the late Victorian Era to the first half of the 20th Century. George Walker started the business in 1845 when he secured the royalty for electroplating at Sheffield. They originally traded as Walker & Co. In 1848 Henry Hall became a partner, they were then renamed Walker, Coulson & Hall, eventually becoming Walker & Hall in 1853 with a factory at Howard Street, Sheffield and showrooms at 45 Holborn Viaduct, London. The Company enjoyed great success mostly with items of tableware and cutlery, becoming famous for its quality products around the world, not only in England & Europe but spreading as far as Australia & South Africa.

Walker & Hall were taken over by Mappin & Webb in the 1960’s.
