Item Description
A French gilt gesso mirror in the Louis XVI style, c. 1800. Of elegant rectangular form, the frame is adorned by a delicate beaded frieze, lending the piece an architectural quality. The fretwork crest centres on a fluted pilaster in the manner of a flower-filled vase, from which acanthus scrolls and a garland of foliage extend to either side, finished with pendant husks. Geometric mouldings and acorn finials complete the base.
The sides retain their original dark green painted surface, set in quiet contrast with the warm patina of the gilding. Of versatile medium size, this graceful mirror combines balanced proportions with a restrained, authentic interpretation of the Louis XVI style.
