A 19th-century Italian oil painting on board depicting ecclesiastical emblems in gold against a deep forest-green ground. A bishop’s mitre stands in the centre, its lappets falling in graceful loops, above a crosier and a processional cross arranged in a bold cross motif. The emblems are rendered in warm gold, with sculptural highlights of ochre giving the composition relief against the dark background. Presented in its original giltwood frame, with a bold, thick moulding, the gilt surface showing honest patina and the sides painted green.
A characterful devotional work in rich colour.
