Item Description
An early 19th-century faience ornamental urn from Northern France, possibly Lille. Decorated in blue and white with elaborate lambrequins surrounded by graceful scrolls, flowers and foliage, alongside two evocative maritime scenes on either side of the urn and bold relief acanthus leaves at the base. Of elegant baluster form, raised on a piedouche, finished by a narrow neck and flanked by two female mask handles, its impressive scale drawing on 18th-century water fountains.
The detailed decoration recalls the refined style of 18th-century Rouen and Lille, while the maritime scenes are influenced by Dutch Delft. This intricate sense of pattern contrasts with bold relief elements, lending the urn a striking sculptural presence.
Unrestored and in very good condition. A rare piece, with distinctive form and refined decorative presence.
- Height: 50 cm
- Diameter: 35 cm
- Light wear to body, minor glaze losses to one mask, minor firing defects, otherwise unrestored and excellent condition for the scale.
- Apocryphal mark underneath.
