Item Description
A 19th-century French faience jardinière from Nevers, of elongated form with striking twisted handles on both sides, standing on three feet. The body features bands at the top and bottom.
It is decorated in blue and white with manganese outlines, with chinoiserie scenes of figures on a bridge surrounded by trees, rocks and bushes. Blue dashes adorn the handles and upper body, while a frieze of egg-and-dart patterns decorate the lower part. A further chinoiserie scene and stylised floral ornaments are featured inside the vessel.
Refined brushwork characterises the scenes, with delicate line drawing adding detail to faces and trees, and painterly shapes providing colour and rhythm. These light scenes contrast beautifully with the lively patterns executed in broader brushwork.
A rare jardinière of sculptural presence and exquisite decoration, in the tradition of 17th-century Nevers.
