Item Description
'Black/White/Grey Composition' - Oil on canvas by Theodore Mendez (1934–1997), signed and dated June 1967.
A precisely structured abstract composition based around a hand-drawn grid, punctuated by geometric forms in black, white and graduated greys. The restricted palette places emphasis on rhythm, proportion and the relationship between positive and negative space.
London-born Mendez studied at Camberwell School of Art, where his contemporaries included Terry Frost, Howard Hodgkin and Gillian Ayres. He returned to teach at Camberwell in 1958, later becoming Head of Textiles, while continuing a practice encompassing painting, collage and design. Geometric abstraction remained an important strand of his work, with his understanding of pattern and textiles particularly evident in compositions of this period.
Presented in a hand-painted wooden tray frame, leaving the original edges of the canvas visible.
