Item Description
'Composition on Brown Ground' is an original oil on canvas by Morris Kestelman RA (1905–1998), painted in 1964. The work was exhibited at the Royal Academy as part of a retrospective celebrating the artist and remains in its original studio frame.
Kestelman was one of the leading figures in twentieth-century British art. After studying at the Central School of Art and the Royal College of Art, he became Head of Painting and Sculpture at the Central School of Art and Design, where he taught from 1951 to 1971. His career spanned post-war British figuration and later abstraction, exhibiting alongside artists of the London Group and the New English Art Club, and sharing the wider artistic landscape with contemporaries including John Piper, Graham Sutherland, Keith Vaughan, John Minton and Robert Colquhoun. He was elected a Senior Royal Academician in 1986.
Painted during Kestelman's mature abstract period, Composition on Brown Ground demonstrates the confident, pared-back language of form and colour that came to define his later work.
