Item Description

An original oil on canvas by Morris Kestelman RA (1905–1998), painted in 1964. The work was exhibited at the Royal Academy as part of the retrospective celebrating the artist's life and work, and is presented in its original studio frame.

Kestelman was one of the leading figures in twentieth-century British art. A Royal Academician and Head of Painting and Sculpture at the Central School of Art and Design, he played an important role in shaping post-war British painting. Working alongside contemporaries including John Piper, Graham Sutherland and Keith Vaughan, he developed an increasingly abstract visual language during the 1960s, balancing bold colour with simplified, sculptural forms.

Image on Red Ground is a striking example of this mature period, its confident composition and vibrant palette reflecting the assured approach that characterises Kestelman's later work.
