Item Description
An attractive collection of ten French Nevers faïence plates, decorated with a charming variety of naïvely painted birds, animals and figures, each set within individually conceived polychrome decoration. The plates are painted in the characteristic Nevers palette of cobalt blue, green, yellow and manganese, with lively hand-painted motifs including exotic birds perched amongst foliage, a cockerel, paired birds, and a central scene of a bird amongst palm-like vegetation. Several examples have scalloped or shaped rims, further embellished with floral sprays, scrolling foliage, geometric borders and colourful line decoration. The free and expressive brushwork, varied designs and slightly irregular forms are typical of provincial French faïence production. Nevers was particularly renowned for polychrome animal and bird decoration during the 18th century. The group displays the appealing variations that occur in Nevers production, rather than being a formally matched dinner service, making them particularly effective when displayed together as a decorative collection. France, 18th Century, Priced as a collection. Measurement is of larger bowl. Large Bowl 8cm x 30cm dia Plates 4cm h 23cm Dia
