Early 20th century Azoux anatomical model

An Azoux anatomical model depicting a horse’s leg. This rare carved wooden model is painted with egg-tempura and finished with lacquer. The model is paper stamped with anatomical section detail for teaching aid. With natural aging and loss but in overall presentable condition as shown.

Dr. Louis Thomas Jerome Auzoux was a French doctor who used papier-Mache/and wood for making his anatomical models. Auxoux started the production models in times of lack of corpses to practise dissections. He began producing the anatomical models in 1827 in his workshop in his hometown Saint Aubin D’Ecrosvill. He developed mal techniques that enabled him to mass-produce the anatomical models. His models are considered one of the best in the field due to their scientifically correctness, their bright colours and their well-made detail existed for more than 1.5 century’s.

This item shows natural wear and aging through obvious use. With a natural patination across its surface, over years of use this item has loss of paint, chips, dents and marks of surface damage as shown in the photos provided. This item does not stand alone (as it would have been on a stand originally and has only been shown this way for advertising purposes, however by placing a small wedge underneath it can stand fine as we have done to photograph this example.
