Item Description
Late 18th century naively portrayed painting of a New Zealand Māori Chief titled “Poear Joea”. It’s painted on thin parchment paper and bares reference to the artist “H Heasham” or “H Henshaw”. Almost certainly painted by an early traveller visiting the Islands during the time of Captain Cook. There is also an interesting note in an envelope attached to the reverse that mimics with the hand scripted text on the reverse of the painting.
Age related staining and browning to the parchment, the piece appears to of been folded for a large period its life.
Housed in a 19th century gilt glazed frame
Frame 29/24cm
