Item Description
19th Century undertakers sizing/reference template board.
Carpenters and Undertakers often used human-based units of measurement (anthropometric units). And this would ring true when building a custom sized coffin. The board would help the maker scale the coffin appropriately based on the head size, a person is typically about 7 to 7.5 heads tall on average
The reverse has a pinned on thin card diagram numbered 1 to 8 and appears to be specific measurement points on a coffin, also some period writing “Feet First Into The House Feet First Into The House”.
The front of the board is a table handwritten In pencil, and shows dimensions/measurements corresponding to different parts of a coffin. The left hand side shows the length of the body, and moving across left to right show the appropriate sizing needed to fit that particular person.
Measures 24.2cm x 11cm x 1.3cm
