Item Description

A wonderful little Victorian curiosity. A peaceful looking mouse skeleton lays in a glazed mahogany case, with a ink inscription on the back that we believe to be copied word for word (some time ago) from the original paper label on the top that has some losses and has become almost illegible from discolouration/fading over time, also a period collection label on the side. The mouse was discovered in the Cavendish tomb in the vault of Bolsover Church at the time of the internment of the 4th Duke of Portland (1768 - 1854), from the skull of his father William Cavendish Bentinck, 3rd Duke & 4th Earl of Portland KG. PC (1738 - 1809, Prime Minister 1783 & 1807-1809) 5cm high x 8 cm wide.
