Item Description
This is an exquisite antique Italian sculpture of the Roman god Mercury that dates from the 19th century. Created with exceptional artistic quality and brilliance this rare statue is made of bronze that is mounted on a marble base. Outstanding in its beauty and refined creative execution gives this statue a timeless and powerful presence. Mercury inspired artists for centuries as he was equivalent to the Greek god Hermes usually depicted with wings on his head. He is a messenger god that was closely associated with travel, commerce, merchants and financial gain. The sculpture bears the artist's signature - seen on his left shoulder - which is difficult to decipher. However this suggests its importance. It measures about 27 x 20 x 17 cm or approximately 10.6 x 7.8 x 6.6 inches with a stand. It is in great antique condition for its age with signs of ageing only seen in a few minuscule chips of the marble base. It is exactly as I discovered it recently in Parma.
