Item Description
An antique Grand Tour faux book of plaster intaglios by Pietro Paoletti (1801-1847).
This intriguing book encloses thirty-eight classically themed Italian medallions surrounded by a gilt border on a deep blue background between two handsome covers.
The faux book spine reads 'Pompeo Mastrozzi' and 'Museu Diversi', meaning different museums, accompanied by a hand-written index page inscribed 'Sifanno in Roma Piazza di Spagna No 49'.
The book by this talented Italian painter showcases a characterful timeworn rustic look while the medallions display an elegant lightly weathered finish. A perfect decorative piece evoking style and intrigue.
Pietro Paoletti (1801-1847)
Paoletti had a great reputation representing clients such as Catherine the Great of Russia and Ferdinand III, Grand Duke of Tuscany.
Today, examples of his casts are displayed and conserved in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, and the Yale Center for British Art, Connecticut.
Until 1847, Paoletti's studio was located on the Piazza di Spagna in Rome. The company continued to do business after his death until 1865.
This impressive book dates from the lifetime of Pietro, as shown by the inscription 'Sifanno in Roma Piazza di Spagna No 49'.
