Item Description

An antique Grand Tour style fragmentary white statuary marble sculpture of Aeschines, ancient Greek statesman and orator born in the 3rd century BC.

Displayed on a modern steel stand, this sculpture is expertly carved, from the robes to the facial features.

Aeschines' robes fall around his body perfectly, as he shows a wise expression and stance.

In Neoclassical style, this sculpture is a striking decorative piece for a Neoclassical or Grand Tour style home looking to appreciate Greek history.

Aeschines (390 BC-314 BC)

Aeschines was best known for being one of the 10 greatest orators of his time and the arch-enemy of the statesman Demosthenes.

One of his most poignant moments in history was during his time as a member of the embassies to Philip II. His influence lead to peace of Philocrates between Athens and Macedonia.

However, his negotiations and will for reconciliation for the Athenians lead to his prosecution of treason at the hand of his enemies Demosthenes and Timarchus.

But in retaliation, Aeschines saved himself by successfully indicating Timarchus for gross immorality, and at his own trial he was acquitted by narrow majority.

Aeschines is praised in history for changing the scope of public speaking and is known as 'father of the Second Sophistic’.
