Item Description

An antique A.W.N Pugin glazed encaustic tile by Minton & Co depicting the Prince of Wales coat of arms.

This 5 inch square tile is adorned with three lions passant within a heraldic shield and flanked by seed pods on scrolling foliate stems, thought to be fruits of planta genista and the emblem of the Plantagenists, all in a buff terracotta over a rich rouge ground.

A tile by A.W.N Pugin, much like this, is currently on display in the V&A museum, London, dating to 1847.

The gothic revival designer reputedly made drawings for tiles during his many journeys on the night train from London to Staffordshire, while engaged in works for the Earl of Shrewsbury.

Dating to circa 1844 this tile originates from Pugin’s studio Alton Towers, Shrewsbury’s Seat, now making for a perfect decorative piece for display in a period cottage or townhouse looking to add style and charm.

CONDITION REPORT

Good structural condition. Generally clean with light wear to the glaze. Small chips and nibbles to the edges. Clean sides and back. Back stamped Minton & Co.
