Item Description
An original Grand Tour white marble plaque of Greek origin depicting the story of Orpheus and Eurydice after the 5th century BC antique located in the Villa Albani, Rome.
Dating from circa 1800, this plaque is set into a later 19th century marble frame and comes with a bespoke steel stand ready for interior display. Over 225 years old, this antique white marble plaque is a spectacular collector’s piece, pairing beautifully alongside other neoclassical inspired décor.
ORPHEUS & EURYDICE
According to ancient mythology, the Greek hero and musician, Orpheus, was granted access to the underworld to recover his deceased wife, Eurydice. However, there was one condition: Orpheus must not look back until they reach the light.
This relief depicts the musician to the right, with lyre in hand, as he turns to look back at his wife too soon. Behind Eurydice to the plaque left is Hades, King of the Underworld, his hand in hers as he claims her back to the underworld.
