Item Description

A large antique late 19th century stained glass panel depicting an allegorical classical maiden, thought to be the goddess Nyx, in the manner of Stephen Adam & Son, Glasgow.

The panel depicts the figure clad in a diaphanous robe with long curling hair and an oil lamp raised in her left arm, standing on a step, amongst lilies and flowering foliage, drapery to the upper corners, a sickle moon to the night sky.

This stained glass window stands at over 4ft tall, making an impressive feature window in any property seeking a flourish of beautiful colour and contemporary artistry.

Provenance

The artist Stephen Adam (British, 1846-1910) established his studio in Bath Street, Glasgow, in 1870.

He was responsible for much of the finest stained glass produced in the country for the next forty years.

Much of his secular glass, such as this panel, was commissioned by the newly wealthy Scottish industrialists and shipping magnates.

CONDITION REPORT

Good structural condition. Two small cracks to the borders on the lower half of the panel. Small number of historic repairs. Housed in a temporary frame.
