Item Description
An impressive Victorian stained glass window by Adam & Small of Glasgow made in circa 1895 to commemorate the opening of the Old Man's Friend Society in Rottenrow Balmanno House in 1845. This large and vibrant piece is intricately decorated, detailed with and abundance of florals, scrolling foliage and colours. To the centre are two figures – a woman caring for a man – beside a cornucopia, the outer oval inscribed with the words: ‘Old Man’s Friend Society, Glasgow’.
Adam & Small Stained Glass
Edinburgh-born stained glass designer Stephen Adam and David Small established the Adam and Small studio in 1870 and were pioneers of modern stained glass in Scotland for the next 40 years. Notable commissions included the Glasgow City Chambers, Aberdeen Trinity Hall and Maryhill Burgh Halls.
CONDITION REPORT
Good structural condition. Hinged like a door at present. It is secondary glazed with a lightly etched surface on the inside.
