The ship Columba was built at the yard of Messrs Walter Hood & Co., Footdee, Aberdeen. She was launched in 1865 under the command of Captain Richie. The yard was responsible for building many of the finest ships to be launched from Aberdeen including the famous clipper Thermopylae, rival to Cutty Sark in the Great Race of 1872. Launched as a clipper rigged ship for the west coast trade of South America, Columba was re-rigged as a barque in 1871. From 1876 to 1877 Columba was owned by D. Sclavo and registered in Hong Kong; from 1880 to 1886 ownership had transferred to J. Sclavo and Columba was now registered in Odessa, Russia.
The Chinese artist, Lai Fong, worked from his studio in Calcutta from around the time this portrait was painted until circa 1910. His work was much in the manner of the previous generation of ship painters who had worked from Hong Kong such as Lai Sung or Namcheong although his work is usually on a somewhat larger scale.
