Item Description

A very early polished coconut shell mounted in silver as a two-handled drinking cup.

The rim engraved with initials centred with a star.

Probably dating from around 1600.

4 inches high to the top of the handles. rim dia: 3 1/8 inch

Coconuts, sometimes known in previous centuries as Indian Nuts, quickly became regular imports from South Asia to the Mediterranean regions along with other valuable commodities such as pepper, cardoman and turmeric, ginger, cloves and nutmeg. The coconut was thought to possess magical and medicinal properties and was a curiosity often added to a collection of such things; A Cabinet of Curiosities, and by as early as 1500, the coconut cup, made from the shells such as this, was established as a popular form of European tableware.
