Item Description

An amazing, wonderful door stop, or door porter, in perfect condition.

The design being as a gentleman's fob seal, cast in brass and retaining, unpolished, much of the original gold-tinted lacquer together with the frosted chasing and bright burnished contrast. Mounted on a green velvet covered base decorated with pressed and gilded upholsterer's nails.

For a very similar model (in unattractive condition) see Sothebys sale held on 29th September 2009, 'Two Noble Collections:Powderham Castle and Seaton Delaval Hall', lot no. 116.

This doorstop 15.75 in x 8.25 in x 5.5 in Dating to circa 1820.

Seaton Delaval Hall was the home of the 'Gay Delavals' famous for its architecture and infamous parties. Built for Admiral George Delaval by Sir John Vanbrugh between 1719 and circa 1730, neither saw its completion. The architect died in 1726 whilst Delaval fell from his horse and died at the age of 55 in 1723. The Grade 1 listed Hall is situated in Whitely Bay, Northumberland and was saved by the National Trust in 2009.
