Item Description
A fine pair of George II swirl-based brass candlesticks, this pattern made by the best of the Birmingham makers such as George Grove, William Lee and Edward Durnall, the quality of these commensurate with any of them when at their best.
The shaft cast in two halves vertically and brazed together so neatly as to render the seam almost imperceptible which in turn is peened to the base, neatly turned out silversmith fashion on a lathe where possible and by scraping into the swirls. The shafts originally fitted with an internal screw mechanism to facilitate the removal of the unusable candle stump; one present but jammed, the other long gone. The principal knop with shoulders conforming to the base, as does the edge of the bobeche.
English circa 1760.
9 inches high x dia:4 5/8 inches
