Item Description

An exceptional brass-bound rosewood writing slope; ‘Mary Ann Levin’s Desk’.
A fine and beautiful Georgian period lap desk, brass bound rosewood over mahogany with lift-up handles to the sides opening to be a blue-leather re lined writing slope. A full-length drawer runs along the base of the box, retained in the usual way with a long pin passing through the right hand side of desk. Beneath the writing implements section are concealed three tiny secret drawers, exposed by removing the right hand lining of the inkwell compartment and depressing a brass catch which in turn releases the covering panel. Behind the upper flap to the lid is stored a ledge that can be employed to hold a book when the desk is used to read from, the elevation adjustable by the use of a brass prop on the right hand side of the case. The name-plate inlaid to the lid engraved in script MAL, the fine lock stamped Tompsons Patent Bir'm, and GR Patent.
English circa 1810.
