Item Description
Sarah Capel-Coningsby (1759-1838) was a noted amateur artist working in watercolour and gouache. She specialised in making copies of 16th century portraits, sometimes adding coats of arms and other heraldic devices demonstrating her knowledge of heraldry. Many of these portraits, one hundred of which were published in Lucy Aikin's Memoirs of the Court of Queen Elizabeth, are the only evidence of now lost originals. She became the Countess of Essex on her second marriage to Baron Capell, Viscount Malden and Earl of Essex, being his first wife.
This print, a mezzotint by Charles Turner after the painted portrait by Robert Fagan, was published in 1816 from the engraver's final London address, Warren Street, where he died in 1857.
Charles Turner met J.M.W. Turner whilst a student at the Royal Academy, and worked with the artist as engraver on the Liber Studiorum, working in mezzotint over outlines etched by J.M.W Turner. The two men collaborated closely, J.M.W adding new ideas to the proofs as they progressed. After 3 years the two argued and, although Charles continued to engrave and publish some of Turner's work, did not speak for 19 years. The fact that Charles was one of J.M.W. Turner's executors suggests that the relationship was latterly mended.
This mezzotint presented in a good replica of an eighteenth century moulding frame.
