Item Description
Peter van Bleeck, son of the portrait painter Richard van Bleeck, was born in The Hague in 1697 and came to England in 1723. He too was a portrait painter and became especially well known for his theatrical sitters and his paintings were often engraved. Subjects included Kitty Clive and Margaret Woffington (see “The Fair Oysterinda”), and the subject of this mezzotint; Owen McSwiny. He was also a fine engraver and was responsible for engraving both this, his own work, and amongst others, Sir Peter Lely’s portrait of Nell Gwynne.
Owen McSwiny (1676-1754) was an Irish theatre impresario and art dealer. He became well known in London for his work popularising opera and his agency in Venice. Having been made bankrupt at the beginning of 1713, McSwiny left England and journeyed through France, the Netherlands and Italy before settling in Venice in 1721. It was from here that he signed Italian opera talent for the London stage and and to commission art works from Italian artists for English collectors. These included works by Antonio Canaletto and Rosalba Carriera.
A fine engraving in fine condition. Presented within a good replica of a correct eighteenth century print frame.
