Item Description

Graphite and watercolour drawing of a Regency Gentleman, very well presented within a paper mache frame with a gilt brass inset.

The work 5 3/8 in x 6 3/8 in. o.s:9 3/8 in x 10 3/8 in

Little is known about Wheeler although he is thought to have hailed from Windsor. Clearly he later worked from London, Fleet Street; "The Dictionary of Portrait Painters" suggests between 1826 and 1834, although Chris Coles (Researcher, BADA Recommended Service Provider) has been able to find two advertisements for Thomas Wheeler, The London Gazette of October 1821 confirms his address as 184 Fleet Street, (some 5 years earlier than the DoPP suggests), and a second from November 1826 announcing that Thomas has opened an Evening Drawing Academy, again, from his home at 184 Fleet Street. Clearly successful in his chosen profession, he is referred to in a legal document of 1830 as a ‘gent’.
