Item Description
A really wonderful and rare figural brass needlecase by W. Avery & Son.
Circa 1880.
Featuring the burial of poor cock robin, this scene derives from the English folk song / rhyme that dates back to the 15th century.
The family firm ‘Averys’ were founded in 1758 and based themselves in Redditch 15 miles from the centre of the Industrial Revolution- Birmingham.
In the 19th century the Redditch area produced the majority of the world's needles.
Finely worked design using chasing and repoussé techniques. Raised on a velvet and brass studded plinth.
