Item Description
A very scarce example of Scandinavian folk art furniture.
Sweden, early nineteenth century. Retaining the most wonderful original paintwork.
The sculptural under arm supports most likely relate to the 'Dala Horse' a strong symbolism in Swedish culture.
Dalecarlian horses represent good luck, strength, courage, and hospitality. With references of the sculpting and painting of these horses dating back to 1694 in the province of Dalarna.
In 2021 there was a record breaking sale of a small early nineteenth century Dala Horse by Erik Olsson, selling at Dalarnas Auktionsbyrå for over $40,000.
Erkmats Erik Olsson (1814–1883) was a much celebrated Swedish woodcarver and folk artist from Dala-Floda, Dalarna, widely renowned for crafting some of the earliest and most historically significant Dalahästar (Dala horses).
