The Arts and Crafts Movement began in Britain and was popular from about 1880 to the 1920s. This period of furniture making was also intended to show respect for handmade items, especially at a time following the Industrial Revolution from the previous century.
The Arts and Crafts period covered many categories of decor, including furniture, lighting, architectural and garden. One of the most well known was the Compton Pottery. Created by a woman, Mary Watts who was the wife of the well known artist, George Watts. It was intended to encourage and educate un-trained workers to gain a skill they could use and make a living at. Items by this company are very sought after today.
