The definition of folk art is many and varied. It conjurs up that an item has been hand made by an untrained, but not un-skilled craftsman or worker. Many simple items now fall under this term, such as stools, utensils and decorative items made for the home because it was necessary or the only affordable way for a person to decorate or obtain for their home the items they needed or wanted. Many pieces have some form of painted decoration. Items can include paintings, sculpture, figures, carvings and needlework samplers made by the Ladies of the day as a way to pass time, though some made also by Children.
Other terms that spring to mind are unfussy, vernacular, useful, purposeful. Items with warmth, colour and patina to them, created over years of handling and use.
Naieve art can be used to describe folk art, in many ways as it conveys an item has been creaed for visual pleasure, but by untrained hands.
