Item Description
An original lithograph by Anthony Waterer. Signed and dated 1938. Annotated 'The Cow With the Crumpled Horn'. Mounted in a beech frame.
Very little is known about this artist, but it is on record that the Contemporary Art Society purchased a copy of this lithograph in 1939, and then presented it to the Prints and Drawings Department of the British Museum in 1945. There is also a copy in the Auckland Art Gallery. This latter example was one of 311 prints by leading British artists gifted to the gallery by New Zealand-born Rex Nan-Kivell in 1953. Nan-Kivell served as the managing director of London's Redfern Gallery from 1931 until his death in 1977, having originally joined the gallery in 1925. He had an extremely good eye - besides this work by Anthony Waterer, his gift to the Auckland Gallery included works by Cyril Power, Sybil Andrews, Eric Ravilious, Eileen Mayo, Eduardo Paolozzi, William Scott, Eric Gill, Duncan Grant, and Robert Colquhoun to name but a few!
