Item Description

A small proportion Charles II joined oak chest of drawers with applied geometric mouldings to the façade and a deep, rich original patina. Circa 1670.

The chest has been sympathetically cleaned and wax polished, bringing out that wonderful patina.

It stands on its original stile feet and is constructed throughout using traditional pegged joinery. There is slight movement in the joint construction, consistent with age, but the piece remains very usable.

The drawers all work well, the drawer interiors have been cleaned. The carcass retains the original elm runners.

The chest has the original escutcheon plates and iron locks, later screws added to the locks. Some small historic replacements to a few of the mitred mouldings, and the drop handles are 19th century period replacements. There is some historic woodworm present around the chest, mainly to the base where a section of timber was replaced at some point in the past. The woodworm appears old but has been treated as a precaution.

A remarkably well preserved chest of drawers, ready for use. Impressive for a piece of such great age.
