Item Description

A William and Mary joined oak provincial chest of four drawers. Circa 1690.

Constructed in English oak and standing on its original bun feet, the chest is arranged as two short over three long drawers with simple peripheral mouldings. With its original rich patina which has just been sympathetically cleaned and wax polished. It is in one piece, and does not break down.

An earlier 17th century carved panel has been reused as the rear wall of the top back drawer, adding historical interest for the discerning collector.

The chest retains its original elm and iron box lock to one drawer, while the brass swan‑neck handles on shaped plates and escutcheons are later historic additions.

To be expected there are knocks and marks consistent with age. The backboard is a later Georgian pine replacement, and three drawer runners have been historically replaced. All drawers work well and have had the interior space cleaned.

There is some historic woodworm present, mainly to the underside. The woodworm appeared old, but has been treated as a precaution.

It remains a very robust chest of drawers of East Anglian joinery from the Stuart period. Impressive for a piece of such great age.
