Antique Painted Faux Bamboo Pedestal Plant Stand, 19Th Century

ANTIQUE TWO TIERED PLANT STAND

An upper galleried circular platform is supported by three leggy, hand-carved faux-bamboo legs, slightly out swept with tapered feet. There is also a lower circular platform supported by the stretchers.

Hand painted with yellow ochre ground and highlighted in black and red to emulate bamboo.

Found in an attic of a Somerset country house, by repute it had been there since at least the 1950s.

It probably dates from some point in the 19th-Century. It is very much in the Regency style, at first we thought it was later than that because the paintwork was in such good condition. It could potentially date from later in the 19th century. On close inspection the screws underneath the base are hand finished with hand-struck asymmetrical slots so this would imply it could be Regency or Early Victorian.

Overall the stand is in remarkable condition, the paintwork is largely good, there is some wear in places you might expect, mostly on the top platform surface and also around the feet, revealing the original green undercoat, but no serious issues. There is some slight movement in the piece when pressed, rather than wear to the joints this might be how it always was, taking into account its elegant proportions and the fact it isn’t a big heavy lump.

Approximate measurements: 97cm high x 45cm wide (at the widest part of the base). The diameter of the opening on the top platform is 23cm inside the gallery.
